Bright Barn
acrylic
Here is my most recent painting for The Flying Moleskins for Irit Bourla's sketchbook. I was inspired by the bright, vibrant colors Irit uses in her paintings so I thought I'd paint this rather ordinary barn with some saturated color - a bright orange barn with turquoise-ish mountains as a backdrop. Her sketchbook theme is "places" so I choose this barn that is close to home because I thought the roof-lines and shapes were interesting. This was my first acrylic painting and it has me missing oils!
My additional inspiration was from a plein air study I painted during a Doug Braithwaite workshop. It was an exercise in trying to paint the correct values using incorrect color. I didn't complete it, but it was fun and freeing to paint using broken, wild color.

Boy that's really nice for a first acrylic painting. I recently switched from oils to acrylics. I'm gradually beginning to like them, but it's taking a lot of adjustment.
Do you prefer to paint with acrylic or oil painting ?
I like this first painting. I like the intense colors.
Beautiful work.
Very nice Michelle! Barns are always popular at the art shows here in VA.
What a great addition to this project.
Both of them are beautiful paintings, Michelle. I find the second intriguing; hope you finish it!
Lucky lucky Irit! Great painting.
Hey Michelle,
Both pieces are incredible! I couldn't pick a favorite because they are both so different yet i love them both!!
great job! love the vibrant colors too! i do have to say it is hard to switch mediums when you are used to your old one you work with all the time!
Joyfully colorful! Barns make great subject material, and this barn seems happy you chose it. And I'll bet Irit will be too. P.S. Hang in there with acrylics.
Great painting! Love the vibrant colors and beautiful scene. Nice work, and I hope to someday get into acrylics. When I do I'll be asking for tips! :-)
Oh, this is great! Great colors. Irit will be thrilled, I'm sure!
PS, I like your new profile photo!
